The cover or application letter is an important tool in the job search process. The cover letter is the first page with the resume as the second. The purpose of combining the cover letter and resume is to spark the employer's interest and to be invited for an interview or informational meeting. To write an effective cover letter you need to take time to research and write an original letter. You should tailor each letter to be specific to each employer and reflect your knowledge of the employer's needs. Researching the organization and opportunity before you write will make this task much easier.

Mr. Mike Matters,
Slackard Industries
6667 Slacky Circle
Any Town, MN 55555

Dear Mr. Matters:

After speaking with Sara Smitty, the Division Coordinator at the Blackard Municipal site, I was encouraged to notify you of my interest in your new management trainee program at Slackard Industries. While researching area organizations, I was attracted by your emphasis on customer service along with your organization's social strength. I also read your mission statement and agree with your company's focus on enthusiasm and hard work. I believe this fosters strong teamwork and helps to shape a more enjoyable and professional environment.

I believe that a position with an organization such as yours fits very well with my education, experiences, and future career interests. As a Socialology major and computer minor, my education has provided me with an expanded way of thinking and learning.

When you read my resume, you will see I have extensive experience supervising twenty-five employees. My success and improved department performance was a most gratifying reward.

I have gained many transferable skills as an assistant at my university as well. I utilized written and verbal communication skills through presentations, peer counseling, debates, and promoting various career development events.

I would appreciate the opportunity to further discuss how my skills and knowledge would benefit Slackard Industries. My resume is enclosed for your review. You may contact me at (555) 555-5555 or Please feel free to leave a message if I am not available. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
